Over 1,000 Mopani contractors working under Murray and Roberts are seen at mine offices being issued with retrenchment letters. Some miners could not hold back their tears, as they don’t know what becomes of their families and relatives who depended on them.
Mopani has terminated over 6 major contractor companies including Murray and Roberts, peruvian reliant drilling and Redrillza, which cause a further 5,000 job losses out of the total 12,000 miners employed/contracted by Mopani.
Glencore’s Mopani copper mine moves to care & maintenance
Glencore-owned Mopani Copper Mines is to transition its operations to care-and-maintenance status from Wednesday April 8 but will continue to process on-site material at the associated Zambian smelter and refinery until further notice.
Mopani cited the repercussions of the Covid-19 pandemic along with a weaker copper price for the decision, which it made after a number of meetings with government ministries on April 6 and with the support of Glencore.
The operating, regulatory and macro-economic environments remain very challenging, and have continued to place significant pressure on the business,” Mopani said.
